Butterfly chair

A chair to embrace human and nature

1. Design Brief

The Ergonomic Shortcomings of Traditional Chairs

Traditional chairs, with their fixed 90-degree angles, don't support the spine's natural curve. According to Cranz, this design encourages slouching and poor posture, which can lead to chronic back pain and other musculoskeletal issues. Their static structure also limits movement and circulation, worsening discomfort over time.

A Body-Mind Perspective on Sitting

To counter these effects, Cranz promotes dynamic seating that supports movement and posture variation. Chairs that rock, tilt, or shift with the user better match natural body motion, improving comfort and circulation.

2. Design Process

Sketches

With these insights, i created some initial sketches for my ideas of a curved chair that embodies all body shapes. After some iteration, I decided to go with this flowy winged design (left figure) and extend further more on its features.

3. Concept Design

Biomimicry Design

The Butterfly Chair is a concept design inspired by the delicate form of butterfly wings. The curved backrest mimics their organic shape, creating a light and airy feel while providing ergonomic support. With contrasting wood tones and smooth contours, this chair brings nature’s elegance into a functional, everyday piece.

the chair features a neutral, cool-toned color palette and a minimalist design that subtly blends into its surroundings. It doesn’t overpower the space, but rather complements your room with understated elegance.
